Summer Reading

The Iowa Reading Research Center is currently developing program criteria and guidelines for the implementation of intensive summer reading programs in school districts across Iowa.

The Importance of Summer Reading Programs

Research shows that reading proficiency by third grade is an important predictor of school success, and that early identification and ongoing support for readers who struggle is an essential component. According to Iowa law (SF 279.68) beginning in 2017, school districts must provide an intensive summer reading program for any student between their 3rd and 4th grade year who exhibits a substantial deficiency in reading.
